FIFA's first World Cup kicked off in Montevideo in July 1930. Only thirteen nations took part — four from Europe, after a three-week Atlantic crossing. Uruguay, Olympic champions and centenary hosts, beat Argentina 4–2 in the final at the Estadio Centenario. Since that day the World Cup has stopped the planet every four years — the single most watched event in human history.
