On 29 July 1911, Mohun Bagan defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment 2–1 to win the IFA Shield — the first Indian club to take a major title from a British regimental side. The players, most of them barefoot against booted soldiers, became known as the Immortal Eleven. In colonial Bengal the victory meant far more than football: newspapers of the day read it as a nation discovering its nerve.
