At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, India beat hosts Australia 4–2 in the quarterfinal, with Neville D'Souza scoring a hat-trick — the first by an Asian in Olympic football. India finished fourth, the highest any Indian side has ever stood in world football. D'Souza, a Bombay boy from the maidans, proved an Indian forward could frighten anyone.
